Path of Exile 2 is about to get a lot of new players, and this Path of Exile 2 beginner guide is for all of them. Grinding Gear Games will fully reveal version 1.0 on November 3, ahead of a free-to-play launch on December 11. If you have never touched Wraeclast, or you bounced off the early access campaign months ago, now is the right time to learn the systems that actually matter. This guide covers classes, leagues, skill gems, and the survival habits that carry a first character through the campaign.

Picking a class in this Path of Exile 2 beginner guide

Your class decides where you start on the passive skill tree and which skills feel natural early, but it does not lock you into one playstyle forever. Eight classes are playable now: Warrior, Witch, Ranger, Mercenary, Monk, Sorceress, Huntress, and Druid. Four more arrive with the full game, bringing the total to twelve.

For a first character, keep it simple:

  • Ranger is the smoothest start for most players. Ranged damage, strong mobility, and forgiving kiting let you learn boss patterns from a safe distance.
  • Witch lets minions absorb danger while you learn pacing and positioning behind an undead front line. It is the most forgiving class when you are still learning what kills you.
  • Sorceress clears packs fast with elemental spells, but she is a glass cannon. You will need to respect danger and dodge more than the other two.
  • Warrior is tanky and straightforward, but melee mistakes are punished harder than ranged ones. Save it for a second character unless you love face-tanking.
  • Mercenary is fun and flexible with crossbows, ammo types, and grenades, but it asks you to manage more buttons than the simplest starters.

Do not agonize over the perfect pick. Your first character teaches you the game; your second character is where the real build planning starts.

Leagues, Standard, and where to start

Before you pick a class, you pick a league. Standard and Hardcore are permanent, and you can toggle Solo Self-Found on either if you want to play without trading. Alongside them runs a rotating challenge league, currently Runes of Aldur, which resets progression and adds seasonal mechanics tied to rune crafting.

New players should start in Standard or the current challenge league. Challenge leagues have the freshest economy and the most active players, which makes trading easier. Standard is calmer and never resets. Either way, you can migrate a Solo Self-Found character to Standard later if you change your mind. Hardcore is for players who already know what they are doing, because death there is permanent.

Skill gems, the passive tree, and your one main skill

Path of Exile 2's defining system is skill gems. Your abilities come from Uncut Skill Gems that you cut into usable skills, then enhance with support gems. The recommended gem system means a new player can hop in and be fairly successful without studying a build guide first, but one rule matters more than any other: pick one main damage skill and build everything around it.

Spread your gems, passives, and gear across three damage skills and all three will feel weak. Commit to one, support it properly, and the campaign becomes dramatically easier. Your passive tree pathing should serve that skill first, with life and defenses second.

Survival habits that actually matter

Most new exiles die the same ways, and all of them are avoidable:

  • Cap your elemental resistances and stack life before chasing damage. Early gear should prioritize life and resistances over flashy DPS stats. A dead character deals no damage.
  • Do not waste currency on low-level gear. Early drops get replaced constantly. Save your crafting orbs and materials for endgame, where upgrades actually stick.
  • Respect bosses and rare monsters. The campaign's difficulty spikes are real, and the game explains very little. When a boss one-shots you, the answer is usually more life, capped resistances, or better positioning, not a new skill.
  • Use your movement skill constantly. Dodging, repositioning, and kiting are core mechanics, not optional flair. Melee and ranged alike live or die on movement.

What comes next before the 1.0 launch

The full reveal on November 3 will fill in the remaining classes and systems, and our Path of Exile 2 1.0 full reveal coverage will track what changes. Until then, the smartest prep is simple: pick a beginner-friendly class, start in Standard or the current league, and learn one skill deeply. The campaign takes most first-timers 20 to 40 hours, and the real game, the Atlas endgame, begins after it. That is a lot of Wraeclast to learn, but it is also why the game has held its audience for a decade. If you like punishing ARPG loops, the Diablo 2 Resurrected Season 16 patch is another rabbit hole worth your time.
